Downloading through a Web Browser

A vast range of programs and files may be downloaded from the Internet through your web browser, including applications, plug-ins, games and other software. Before you start, make sure that you have created a Downloads folder (as described in Setting Up Your System for Downloading). This will keep your downloaded files neatly organised, so that you can deal with them quickly and easily.
Downloading
- Once you've found the program or file that you want to download, click on the link to begin the download process. A box will typically appear, asking you where you want to save the file.
- Locate the Downloads folder on your hard drive and double click on it to open it.
- Click "Save".
- Another box will then usually appear with a status bar that shows you the progress of your download.
Installing Programs
- After the download is finished, you may need to install software. Close any programs that are running, except Windows Explorer (or the file management system for your computer). Find the file you downloaded and run a virus check on it.
- Once you have ensured that the program is virus-free, double click on it. A series of screens will direct you through the installation process. New application programs will usually be installed in the Program files folder, whereas plug-ins will typically be installed in the appropriate browser folder.
- After the software is installed, delete the file in your Downloads folder to free up space on your hard drive.
