Filename

A name comprised of alphanumeric characters, to uniquely identify a file stored on a computer. Different programs and operating systems have their own naming rules. A basic MS-DOS filename contains up to 12 letters or numbers (including the file extension), in the format: "filename.ext". Files saved in Windows 95 or MAC OS 9 (or later versions) allow users to specify a filename of up to 255 characters.

The following characters may not be used:

  • / SLASH
  • | PIPE
  • \ BACKSLASH
  • ? QUESTIONMARK
  • " DOUBLE-QUOTATION MARK
  • * STAR
  • : COLON
  • < LESS THAN
  • > GREATER THAN
